This is a four-year program that allows apprentices to earn a living while learning their trade. Apprentices spend approximately 6,000 hours in on-the-job training, working alongside certified Journeyman Iron Workers. In addition to their on-site training, apprentices are required to complete 180 hours of classes each year.

To apply for an apprenticeship you must do the following:
Be at least 18 years of ageHave a high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent.
Be able to read, write and speak English (this is both to comprehend the in-class instruction and to ensure safety and communication on the work site).
Applicants must appear in person to complete an application form.
Be able to successfully pass a drug test.
Although not required to apply, it is also recommended that you do the following:
Be physically able to work normally in the trade (Iron workers often need to carry or lift heavy weights. They should also have a good sense of balance at great heights).
Purchase or own the required hand tools, which will cost approximately $350 to $400.
Have a reliable way to get to and from job sites and classes.
It is also helpful to have had high school courses in mathematics, metal works or mechanical drawing.
Accepted applicants will be added to an existing eligibility pool. Be aware that this means applicants are not guaranteed employment. Also, be aware that if you cannot meet apprenticeship requirements, including physical fitness, you will be dropped from the program and employment will be terminated.
