How to Become an Ironworker


You must present the following when completing an application:

  • Valid Driver’s License or government issued ID
  • Social Security card
  • High school Diploma (if from other countries, must be translated and notarized) or GED (General Education Development) score or Official high school transcripts (signed and sealed)
  • Be able to lift heavy material and equipment
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Prepared to purchase required tools

The recruitment, selection, employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.


Once an application is made, the applicant will be provided a list of our signatory contractors to solicit employment. Once employment is secured as a potential Local 118 member, the contractor will provide a Sponsorship Letter to the Apprenticeship, confirming the employment, pending that all application requirements have been met by the applicant. Those requirements include a drug test, through our IMPACT program, a mandatory apprentice orientation, and payment of the initiation fee and one month of union dues.
